I'm not sure what you mean by animations - sprite animations, "story" events where the characters move around, movies (not possible in RMXP by default), or something I'm not thinking of - but anything in the game can be activated by a trigger or an event that activates on the hero's touch, in any version of the game. Just do the animation you want to as usual, but change the trigger type to "On Hero Touch" or whatever it says in whatever version of the game you're using at the moment.
Of course if you're asking HOW to do an animation, I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, so there's not much help I can give.
I was talking like movie animations like you would put in as picture and it would just activate and show a cool little movie clip like at the start of some games, like smash bros.

In that case if you are using RM2k3 at least (I cant speek for any of the others) you can make an event and when you double click in the Event Commands txt box it will bring up a secondary window showing the possible event commands in the form of buttons and on the third page, sixth button down on the left side you will find Play Movie. I just realized I am getting a little ahead of myself. The movie file has to be in either avi or mpg format. I have found so far that it does support the Indeo Video 5.10 compression. I use a free video converter wich is pretty decent with a ton of different compresors if you want it. But back to the task at hand. Before you can use the video in an event you still need to import it into the game ( I will assume you know how to do that). Once the movie has been imported and the event has been made, just click on the event command button Play Movie and it will pop up another window and all you have to do is choose the clip you want to play and set the positioning. I hope that helps.
