Send it back to Sony, they'll charge you about $50 for a refurb.

I had the same problem.

Ditto.

The laser motor's gone, mate. If you want, open it up, set the laser in a position (I'd say right back), turn the console on, stick in a game, leave it a few minutes, then stop it, and look at the laser - I'd bet your house on the fact that it hasn't moved.

You can send it back to Sony... or you can find a PS2 that's broken, but with a good laser that works, and chop the two to bits and build a working PS2. At least, that's what my Dad did.

It could just be dirty.

Is it not reading anything at all? Or is it just not working most of the time? If it works a little bit, you can try cleaning it yourself for free. This voids the warranty, though, if it still has one. You also have to be careful not to break anything.

Anyhow, if you want to clean it out, first thing is to turn it off and unplug it. This may seem obvious, but I've got a friend that got burned pretty bad because he forgot to unplug it. Then get a small screwdriver. I used a glasses repair kit to do mine. Take all the screws out. There are a lot of them. Take the top cover off. BE careful not to pull out the cable (it looks like a little strip of paper) that attaches the top to the rest of the unit.

I'm not sure if you have to take off another cover after that. It's been a while. Anyhow, if you do, it's nothing to note. Just take off more screws and another cover.

When you finally see the lens that reads the disc, you're ready to go. Dab a soft cloth in a little water and wipe it gently. Then, just for good measure, spray the whole unit, in every corner and at every angle you can, with canned air before putting it back together.

Voila. It... might work good as new now.

In all honesty, it could be one of a million things. The majority of which can be found out by taking the console to pieces... which then voids the warranty, and you're still not sure if you can fix it.

Best thing to do - send it to Sony.

Well, the warranty is voided, but it's only good for like a year anyhow, right? The $50 repair fee isn't warranty if I recall correctly. It's just what they charge to repair a PS2. I could be wrong.

All I know is that when you ring them up to sort out the sending and whatnot, as long as you answer NO to a couple of questions (like have you used cheat disks, or lens cleaning disks etc) then you're fine. Top Banana, as they say.
