So i downloaded a torrent yesterday i had found of an old game i used to like in my younger years. It is in the form of an ISO file. Can anyone tell me what that is? I tried to open the file and it wants me to choose what application to open it with. Is there something else i have to download that will run that?

An ISO is an image file of a CD. You can either mount it on a virtual drive, or burn it onto a blank CD. I like Alcohol 120% myself, but that's only a 30 day trial unless you get a cracked version. It allows you to create up to 6 virtual drives to mount image files to, which can be pretty handy. It also has the ability to burn CDs/DVDs and such.

If you need any more specific help just lemme know.

I went back to the website i used to get the torrent, and found that the comments suggested Daemon Tools Lite. So i went through that, and uploaded the image. Then i had another problem - it wanted me to get a Macromedia Shockwave Player, finally found that and restarted my computer. When i finally loaded back up i tried to open it and i got this error. What do you think i do from here.

I'm not sure. I never used Daemon Tools. I know it works basically the same as Alcohol 120%, but I don't know anything about it other than what it is used for. Sorry :/

You can open ISO files in WinRAR. It's a 40 day free trial, but when it's expired it's still usable.

Doesn't that just show you all of the garbage in the file, though?

I think what he needs to do is either burn the image onto a CD or mount it on a virtual drive. I've never heard of actually needing to open it and view its contents. I could be wrong, though.

Nah. Any good burning software will give you the option to straight copy a CD, or burn files to a CD. Choose the latter and select your ISO file to burn.

It works essentially like this:

Say I want to make a copy of my Diablo 2 Expansion CD. I can make an image file of the entire CD. That would be the ISO file.

If I were to take that image file and burn it to a CD, that CD would, essentially, be a copy of my Diablo 2 Expansion CD.

Just the same, if I were to send that file to someone else over the internet, they could use it to burn a copy of the Diablo 2 Expansion CD as well.

alot of torrents dont work - but then again a handfull of other games and movies do work - the problem is most of the times people download from a torrent they dont have the correct codec - or just dont understand 1/2 of the program they are using so they dismiss it as an idiot program that doesnt work.

To burn ISO files to a CD, use InfraRecorder.

To play most video and audio formats, use VLC.

Both applications are free and open-source.

Combined Community Codec Pack makes all video work with all programs. It even lets me transcode MKVs with programs that don't understand them.
