Maybe it goes deeper than just making the fella happy. Buy him a gaming console, and he'll spend a lot of time on it, and the wife or girlfriend gets more time alone. Buy him a truck, he goes out driving more, the wife/gf gets more time alone, and there's the added bonus that she can then use the old car whenever she wants. I don't think one needs to worry until you are given a gun.
