The current H5N1 strain was first found in 1951, in Scotland.

Date of first human death connected with H5N1 strain of vird flu: 1997

Confirmed human infections to from H5N1 strain of bird flu (as of Feb 2006): About 180

if it mutates enough you may see millions of times more people infected. x_x
