Merc Business
Reply

Lately, I have been investing a lot of time working on my zon's merc. Specifically, trying to get him to lvl 96 from lvl 95. He is an act 2 defensive aura merc and comes in quite handy. Anyway, aside from lvling him I want to get the best gear I can for him w/o wandering into the very exotic stuff like extreme rune word combinations which I cannot afford. His current gear is this:

Veil of Steel helm

Gladiator Bane armor

Eth Bonehew axe

Considering armor choices what would be a better match? Steel carapace or Duress? Any ideas?

How well does he stay alive with his current gear? Does he ever die?

And how's his damage?

He dies when fighting one of the 5 big bosses and very rarely when he gets pinned by some group of monsters, though that is not often. He comfortably can PK a lvl 70 or so druid that my friend has. He does not die when I make a Travincal run unless I do something stupid with him.

And how's his damage? about 3200.

Well, the standard armor for your merc would be Levi I think. Duress would be good if he doesn't need the DR to stay alive.

And I've never really liked veil of steel on a merc. I assume you're using it for the resists. CoA can have more resist with a couple of Um's and have some DR. Or Andy's Visage, Crown of Thieves, or Vamp Gaze are all good helms because of leech. Gaze has that DR on it as well which is nice.

I assume you have a pair of Amn's in your eth bonehew?

You've got a few choices for armor.

If you're giving up cannot be frozen on your Glad's Bane, you could get it back with a Eternity weapon (310% ed, 7%ll, 20%cb, slows target 33%, CBF).

Or you could always go with a BotD, which people underestimate for mercs. The 400% ed is beautiful, and with the ias, -25% target defense, prevent monster heal, 30 all stats, and max 15%ll, it's a hell of a weapon for a merc.

On the other hand, an Amn Amn eth Bonehew is a good weapon too.

Yes, it is an AMN AMN bonehew.

CoA would be nice but probably beyond my ability to trade for. This is not a ladder character so Levi will be hard to get. I have a Cham vamp gaze that would work for the not being frozen if I can get the armor.

Yeah, I use the Veil for resistances - he has 75 for all in hell which helps.

My one merc that I ever got was for my necro, Schayde. He's summon/bone hybrid. He used cham shako, low doom cryptic axe (i think), and bramble.

I normally dont use mercs though -_-. Pvm or Pvp zon?

She is an old 09 PvM zon that I built about 4 years ago. The merc really helps her, especially now that he has reached a fairly high level. I don't know if a merc would do any good for PvP.

Since the zon is tweaked for MF, she needs the merc to run interference. I just want to tweak his gear and see what works best.

I guess I never even stopped to see if there was a button to wrap text in. I assume you are referring to the "wrap quote tags around text" button?

well you have a nice set up already but if you decide to make a character with a different act 2 merc i would suggest using a Tals helm because i gives LL and resist, and is decent for lower lvl mercs.
