The game gets boring real quick in my opinion. They need to come out with a new better mario RPG like Mario 64 that was fun. This was stupid having to run around get fruit help this weird little fat people and kick some fake mario painting dudes ass.

Mario Sunshine was the best game in the series. Best level design, best gameplay, most amount of fun. But, I suppose that all comes down to opinion.

You need about 70 Shines to finish the game, Osmoses. However, as BlueCube pointed out, you're not a real man until you get all 120.

From what I hear, 120 is pretty difficult to come about. It can be done though. I have the game and got bored when I had about 57 Shines, maybe I should beat it.
