You can hex edit it. And change the colors. Both ways work.
You hex edit the item to make a swordguard item. You can't simply change the colors with a hex editor. There is a certain item code, I'm pretty sure it's like, offset 13 and 14, that you change so it matches the item code of a colored unique. The item you changed will not only change colors, but have the unique's name. Hence, a swordguard helmet. Glad I cleared it up.
