The champion overly exceeds in melee combat, even without any skill points to boost it. The battle cry you obtain through being right spec allows you to easily 1 shot the undeads in Helheim. The Dark Elves aren't much of a hassle either. Being pistol spec'd it allows you to easily clear the monsters before they get to close, it also allows you to deal with polarities in a more secure manner. The champion excels in every aspect of fighting on this game, and it is ideal to keep it that way. With starting pistols being the weak end of a champions stats, it makes sence to boost them up. I would probably suggest socketing your runes with some sort of melee or attack speed bonuses, along with maxing your ballistic firing rate. I would also suggest either improved reload speed or increased ammo. Try to socket some ballistic range in there as well, as the earlier you can start laying waste to the enemies, the more likely it is that you will live.

The elite champions set doesnt exactly compliment this spec, so you might have better luck finding some ballistic open socket gear and customizing your own.
