If an anime is released in japan, how long does it take on average for an english version of it to be released (assuming one will be)?

Are we talking a movie or an episode aired on T.V.?

For a movie it can take months for the DVD to come out first.

For T.V. it depends on the fansubbing group but within a week generally. That's assuming they're already doing the series though. What anime are we talking about specifically?

less than a week. It usually airs and whatever fansubbing group it is gets subs out in a few days.

Do you mean an english version released by a fansubbing group, or by official groups who bought the license and dub it, like for example recently done with, fullmetal alchemist, one piece and nayruto...

The latter usually takes a couple of years.

I'd say around a year, give or take some months. Naruto wasn't licensed until February of this year and it came out on Cartoon Network in September.
