Computer Problems: Need help
Reply
Posted 2004-06-27, 03:00 PM
First of all, I don't think this is a Linux problem. This happend when I installed Windows XP. It never happend with 98. When I installed Linux, I expected this problem to be gone, and it never happend for the first month. Now it occurs more and more often, and I have to reboot every time to get the monitor to display right. The problem I am having is that the monitor ends up displaying like this:

Anyone know what's wrong, and how I could go about fixing it?

Dude, get a new monitor. It's that simple. If you are still having problems then contact Linux Customer Support or something.

It obviously has nothing to do with Linux, since I clearly stated that it happend with Windows XP as well. Normally, there is no customer service for Linux. I doubt it's a problem with the monitor since I can take a screenshot of it, plus this is a fairly new monitor. Some people have told me that it is a problem with my graphics card. Can anyone confirm?

I still say you should get a new monitor. Like a flat screen or plasma screen. That would be pimp. I could see it now.....::wonders into dream world::

It isn't a monitor problem if you can take a screenshot of it. It's your vid card.

Well, it seems to me your monitor is messed up. So you really should be getting that monitor off your hands. You know what, me being the great friend I am, I'll take it from you if you pay me a small amount of, say, $200. Please. Hey, I didn't ask for a baseball bat. Wha...what are you doing? You don't swing them that way. Your supposed to... ... ...OOOHHhhhh. Shit...Ouch...Oooof....uuhhh....Aaahhhh....damn that smarts.....Hey, my nose isn't that big after all......HHHhhuurrggghh....:girggle girggle: It was just an offer. Shees Louise. ::coughs up teeth:: Hey I have more than 20 teeth. HEEYYYyyy, now I'll be filthy rich, when the tooth fairy comes.

Somebody ban that queer.

Anyways. I'm guessing its some sort of a Memory Problem. (Unknowing of the RAM requirements for WinXP and Linux, I can't make any conclusions) But It looks like a Video card problem. If you could give some more of your computer information.

I'd recommend checking your connections , maybe just wiggle it, check to see if its fitted in snugly. And does the problem occur as soon as the computer starts up? Etc, give some more info.

Don't buy a new monitor. It's not your monitor, and I'd bet you $4000 that your monitor is not causing that particular problem.

It's most likely your video card. What you should try first is download new drivers. If that doesn't help, try reaseating it. Open your computer, unscrew the video card, take it out, (blow on it if you want,) then put it back in, and screw it in.

If that doesn't fix it, then something is most likely wrong with your actual card. That means you have to try another card. If you have onboard video, try that. If not, borrow an AGP card from a friend and try it. If your screen is still crappy like that, then your AGP slot is messed up. Try a PCI Video card (if any of your friends have slightly older computers with non-AGP cards). There's a 99% chance that will work. Remember to download drivers for each new card you try too.
