I've got a few suggestions that i'd like to throw out there concerning new members.

First off, don't allow them not to recieve PM's, they should only have the option to block certain members. This deters fellow 'senior' members like myself that have been trying to encourage the new members to take a few minutes away from playing their Arcade games and researching no the latest Diablo 2 maphacks to take some time and introduce themselves and become intertwined in the forums that we graciously call Zelaron.com

Secondly, Force guests to sign up to be able to view the forums. I know it may seem a bit harsh, BUT WHAT GOOD are the non-registered members doing?. I was down with the idea that allows the Guests to post, but obviously it never took off, i'd say the next option is to make them register before they can view anything, as well as playing games.

I know these are pretty straight-forward suggestions that have probably been brought up in the past, but I feel they should really be considered. We've got tons and tons of members that aren't registered that are just hopping on to read w/e it may be, and then bail out. As well as new members coming on all the time for Diablo information, or what have you that don't bother to post.. atleast allow us to PM and encourage them to come along and drop down some posts and ask questions, get them to participate.

I don't see anything wrong with these, tell me what you think about it.

On the contrary! Rarely a day goes by without one of us having to clear the shite up and move it into the Trashcan.

The discussion about guests not being able to view without registering is one that's been held many a time. If I wanted to read a post on a forum, I'd be instantly put off if I was required to register before I could read it, in all honesty.

That may be true in that reguard, but what is there to gain from a bunch of people that are on a read-only basis? Atleast put a blinking banner or something encouraging people to post, that FAQ button must not be working.

What i'm saying is just consider it, we've got so many guests that are browsing around, but they just aren't getting the message, we need to protrude it out towards them in a slightly more agressive manner, in my opinion atleast..

There's a PS3 forum I occasionally visit that has a nice take on the read-only guests - you can view something like ten, or fifteen threads a day, and then you've got to register to start reading more.

Ok, see. Something like that would be great if it could track by IP address and give them an alotted amount of views before they view, I guess that way your theory of turning them off immideately would be gone because now they could have a "free trial"..

I must admit, it annoys me whenever I get it on other forums I'm not registered on. So much so, that I close the page and do something else.

Hard man to please, I am.

Rather than using IPs, it would most probably be done with cookies. I know the PS3 forum is - should I get the message, and can't be bothered logging in, I'll clear my cookies and carry on.

I would have to agree with Lenny. I think closing off the forums to guests would shun more people away from us.

What about something gimmicky? Such as "Get paid TWICE or THRICE what the mods get if you join now! All you need to do is Register, post somewhere and introduce yourself! GET PAID TO POST ON THIS FORUM!" or something... although they may feel a little betrayed, we wouldn't be lying, and they may stick around and feel that our sense of humor is one that is rarely found in real world groups of people.

New members cannot recieve PMs because the same setting prevents them from sending out 100 spam PMs then leaving, which has happened, hence the setting. Also note that, currently, just a single post promotes you to full member (after an hour), so this shouldn't be much of an issue.

Requiring registration to view the forums wouldn't increase registrations, it would eliminate them. Without guests being able to view the forums, search engines would probably stop listing us(because their crawlers wouldn't be able to list our stuff, because they wouldn't be able to see our stuff.)

Also, we don't have that many "lurking" guests. A large majority of our guests are just search engine bots(google, yahoo, etc.)

Okay, I know this is my first post here, but being around the Forums long enough from working on them to just being a casual visitor to some I might have a few things to say.

First thing is first, as it has been said, people don't want to bite into something they have never tried. Having said that you can't close off everything to Guests. However, what I have seen alot of Forums do before is give samples, such as only certain things people can look at without logging in. After all how would a members only section be any good if anyone could access it.

Second, People are lazy, plain fact. They don't have to sign in, they won't. Plus it gives them ability to not be seen when browsing the Forums (or at least they think so, since IPs are tracked it doesn't matter you can tell anyway.) Log ins, and browsing can be increased by having an account banned after said amount of time, such as 6 months without logging in. It helps cut out the really lazy people.

Lastly, people need a gimmick, doesn't matter what it is, they want something. After all people are greedy. Even if you give them something like stupid points that are meaningless, they will make sure they log in everyday. I know a few sites that gives out points for Posts and Threads. Only downside is you have to watch more of the spamming idiots.

Oh well, guess I'm probably not giving you guys anymore ideas than you already had, but figured this would be the best way to introduce myself. Jessifer/ A.K.A. Missy Girl as she is known to me, is the reason I even found this place. Was checking an old Alias she used to use. I knew her along time ago, and I wonder if she will even remember me.

People are Ignorant, and Ignorance is not an Excuse.
