Because it is inherently repulsive to the vast majority of society.

For the same reason that raping a child will get you a harsher sentence than raping an adult. They are innocent.

It's not entirely illegal, killing for sport is generally still acceptable in most areas (depending on the species of animal).

Something that is repulsive to many, does not constitute a proper reason for something to be legal.

Example: if by some reason, the vast majority of society considered "pedophilia" perfectly fine, all jailed inmates for pedophilia would be set free as society's change of heart would dictate that it no longer should be illegal.

Under that logic, anything can and should be ilegal/legal. but the problem here is not that. It's the fact that most people say animal cruelty is "wrong" for biased reasons, such as.

"the animal suffers" "that's a life" etc etc.

Whereas other actions cause human suffering, are fine because they have "actions that provide benefits in the long run" To which i answer.

If you steal from a man, to save your family. Regardless of your intentions, you stole, and you are a thief, and should be punished accordingly.

Therefor, it doesn't matter why you killed the animal, you still killed it, but why is killing/abusing an animal "wrong"

When crops are gathered, the machines completely destroy the poor animals trying to eat the crops.

When animals are raised, they're treated like shit, because they're going to die anyways. And in the end.

They are still killed.

It doesn't matter that you killed an animal to survive, you still, murdered said animal.
why won't you get punished accordingly? Because then the law would crumble, but that same argument is the reason animal cruelty is illegal and "wrong"

Which constitutes as "hypocrisy" or a paradox, but a paradox would be more c omplicated.

I got lost somewhere around, "Something that is repulsive..."

It is wrong because they can't defend themselves in most cases. Even if they could, they likely don't have the chance to. Human's can defend themselves in some cases, so I guess that null's my previous point. Maybe because it is inhumain..? Killing isn't a humain trait..

killing IS a humain trait.

Why?

Simple, in the past, before all this animal cruelty existed.

Humans killed, to survive. Does that make us less humans than we are now?

No we are still the same animals.

We are animals with free will and a conscious mind of self.

Doesn't make us any different. Other than enhanced intelligence.
