Where to begin...

Oooh! This is slightly amusing: http://www.ps3land.com/article-925.php

Quote:
Last week Sony announced that the company expects to lose a $1.7 billion profit. A large majority of that profit loss is development costs for the Sony PlayStation 3.

Today Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation, announced that Sony needs to boost its profits from it's non-gaming related sectors to offset the costs of the PS3.

Next up, we have Sony's viral site for the PS3 - www.playb3yond.com

It first appeared as a white room background, with a melting clock set to 3 'clock, and a PS3. It then changed into a white room background, with a PS3, a weird plant growing up the wall, and lots of little bits of buttons. Now it has a couple of videos on, and the weird plant is hidden (unless you press the green button on the PS3 three times).

It's obviously completely biased towards the PS3, but regardless of that the videos are interesting.

The first video that you will watch is the "Smarter" link. This is a video that goes in depth about the Cell processor. It shows a few demonstrations, comparing the power of the Cell with that of the PS2, stating that the Cell is over 40 times more powerful. It is definitely an interesting watch.

The next clip is entitled "Capacity." This video explains the differences between DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray, and what differences they make on gaming. There is a strong emphasis on the physics, with an example taken from a grenade in Resistance. One thing to note, when the "Rollover to Interact" text show, double click on it for a hidden interactive. In this, you can see some physics calculations and AI scripts that are active in a frozen frame.

There's the familiar news that Sony have once again cut the number of launch consoles - this time in Japan from 100,000 to just 80,000. Tut tut.

-----

And perhaps some of the more interesting news comes once again from those "chaps who played the PS3" - PSM3.

This first link has a list of second first impressions including:

Quote:
1) It's SUPERQUIET. Yes, we've said it before but we're still surprised. It makes less noise than a PS2 - just a thin, quiet whirr of a fan.
2) It gets warm - but not hot. The fan blows air out of the back and out of the top of the machine (when it's in its upright position). It's a bit weird. You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'.
3) Loading discs is a quick, no fuss operation.
5) It's see through. You can see all the innards through the smoked black plastic exterior
7) The power supply is built it - which accounts for what heat there is and makes it a single self contained unit (as opposed to 360's game of two halves).

This second link is to a page containing 3 videos:

1. Unpacking the box the PS3 came in.
2. Starting the machine
3. Menu options.

Oh, and here's something on the PS3 power consumption, for all you electronic nuts: http://www.ps3land.com/article-926.php

Quote:
The PS3 will consume, at max, 380 watts of power.

And that's that for now.

Enjoy!
