That's the official reason, but I saw stores everywhere out of stock on it near constantly...

I personally think it was pulled for caffiene/sugar content, it was just ahead of its time. Considering Surge was one of the FAQs on the Coke site when I visited a long time ago, I think there was enough inquiry about it (how many people would actually email Coke about a soda?).
