Computer Certifications?
Reply

Anything worth getting?

I'm tired of community college. I'm tired of my job. I need a change. I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers and can basically learn anything in a short amount of time, my competence with computers is much higher than almost anything else.

Let's start off with the basic.

A+ - Now I was actually brought up on preparation for this throughout high school but never took the actual certification course to obtain my cert. I'm probably a little bit rusty, but I'm pretty sure with most 'IT' jobs it's a basic and probably recommended to have.

MCSE -
Quote:
The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows® 2000 platform and Microsoft server software.
http://certification.about.com/od/ce...ons/p/mcse.htm

Actually the more i've been looking them up, i'm not exactly sure what i'm wanting to do, what my end-goal is. I'll come back to this thread once I can determine more, but if anyone has advice i'm more than looking forward to reading it.

oh, and if all else fails I found this while google'ing information:

http://www.buyitcert.com/

Hilarious.

Good question. I'd have to say yes, if you have previous work experience. I have passed and have certificates for the General A+, Networking+, Server+, and Security+. However, I could not obtain a job with just those alone due to lack of previous work experience. So yes, it's good, with previous work experience. Then again, I think it's like that with just about any job. *sigh* at my lack of work experience. No, let me rephrase that, lack of recorded-time that I can officially call work experience.

Also, I've never gotten the Microsoft Certifications, so I can't say anything 'bout that.

I've considered being a translator, but I dunno. It feels like a lot of work. If someone gets angry then I have to deal with it, you know? I'd rather just relax.

Experience > any degrees you can pay for.

Honestly d3v if you can teach yourself you don't need to go through that red tape. Granted if you do have certifications it will help, but if you can land a solid year + of some kinda of remedial computer work, thats all you need my friend. Get your foot in the door, fancy up your resume, work your ass off, and never ever stop learning and you can do whatever the hell you want. And always remember, it's not about what you know, it's about who you know.

True, that is some great advice. Well like I said, in High School I have probably hundreds of hours of Tech work but I wouldn't count it as legitimate in the business aspect.

I hold MCSA, MCP, and MCTS. Which basically amounts to jack shit. However, those certs did land me my first IT job.

Real world job experience trumps those, as others have said.

that's basically all i'm asking. I just need to get around to getting some certs and land an entry level job and move on from there.

Ha my mom is doing that computer certification shit. Maybe it'll land her a job, but I doubt it. Good luck D3V. I know everyone is downplaying the degrees and certificates, but they are good to have to couple with your experience. : )

thanks bro. And you're right, it's never bad to have. Because when you can match up with another prospect employee in every other category and have more certifications in the field needed, it could land you that job you're looking for just as much as experience could.

My bro's fiancee got a BS in electrical & computer engineering. This landed her a job at the NSA where she makes 70k a year working on classified software projects. So education does count also.
