Noni - New age medicine argument
Reply
Posted 2006-04-06, 09:00 PM
I'm in an argument with my parents, they believe that my dad needs to use medicine from the 'Ancient Chinese Technique Manual'; needless to say they're wasting tons of money and time on these products.

One they use (that I know of) is Noni, anyone have some _real_ research on these 'Ancient Chinese Techniques'?

Who gives a damn. But if you need cash, just bet that you would through a knife in a tornado and it would fling back at you. Maybe 1k or something. Do it? YOU GOT MONEY.

I give a damn, money doesn't grow on tree's; however, there are no tornados here to do that awesome trick.

There's always a bit of truth in ancient remedies. It's just that modern methods work significantly better most of the time.

-----

Noni hasn't been scientifically proven to work as a cure.

It's not really research, but that's what the official Drug people in America said.

Tell your parents to stop wasting money.

I'll ask my dad about Noni. He's a doctor, lets see what he says.

edit: He didn't even know what it was hah. But as a doctor he said its a very stupid idea.

Thanks guys, so far no one has backed it up even slightly (save for Lenny). How can it be helpful (at all) just becauase it's an 'ancient remedy?'

I'm not specifically saying that Noni will work because it's an Ancient Remedy, but saying that many Ancient Remedies can work to some extent.

For example, you've probably all heard old wives tales? Well over the last century, many cures (for example, one to combat the fungus that causes Athletes Foot) have been based upon Old Wives Tales.

Also, take a look at Egyptian, Roman, Greek remedies. And those from the Renaissance. Some of them may be completely stupid, but some have been proven to work slightly. We know that Ambroise Pare and his miracle mixture for gunshot wounds worked. The Greeks may have been religion crazy, but they had their Good Points. And the Egyptians, well, you're sick because you've got lots of channels in you that get blocked? Let's use some honey! Lo and behold, Honey has many medicinal properties that would work to treat things the Egyptians were using it for...shame they used it in excess.

So, yeah, there is some truth in Ancient Remedies, but modern medicines are far more advanced, and more than likely have been designed for specific illnesses. I mean, you wouldn't use a Cough Medicine if you've got a broken toe, would you?

In conclusion - it's helpful to make more powerful medicines that will do the job. But that's for the Research Scientists to worry about. It's best to go with whatever a Doctor will prescribe.

I'm actually a certified Herbal specialist, personally a lot of these ancient remedies are a load of crap. All Noni really is, is an herbal diuretic thats going to help detoxify (ie make u crap and piss like no ones business.) However there is alot of proof in certain ancient medicines like shitake, matake and reishi mushrooms. Here's a good resource:
http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/content...YFAFYKCQL00UNE

I used to be a store manager for the vitamin shoppe, all the info is third party.

Alot of todays suppliments deterred from ancient medicined though. Things like Noni, Mangosteen and crap like that do have one good thing going for them and thats because there natural and liquid they are really easy for your body to asimilate and break down and cause minimal damage to the liver where most perscription drugs do really radical things to your body.

was there a reason why your dad wants to take this stuff?

ps- Noni isn't a chinese medicine, i think it's Indian or polynesian, something like that.

Nope. There IS truth in some ancient remedies.

That's why some are still used today, with good results. Like accupuncture, as sciencekid has just said.

Btw, surely you should have put NO in italics? Call me peddantic, but it makes more sense.

My favorite to date is those magnetic rings you wear around your wrist and apparently, you can stand upright, walk in straight lines and have better night sleeps. I think its a load of crap, but hey, if it gets you going

Better than any drugs too! Go sit in front of the computer and watch all the pretty rainbows fly around on your monitor.

Even if they don't work, at least you'd never lose your car keys again. They'd just stick to you.
