It's ingrained in your genes to contribute to the reproduction of the race, and anything inhibiting that process, including a lack of "cherishment" and protection for females, will not be propelled.
It seems to me that the majority of male society is comprised of bachelors. So disregarding the homosexual variety, going with the assumption that bachelors want to find a female with which to procreate and live in union, they will do everything in their power to demonstrate they can serve as the protector of any given female. As such, chivalrous acts are perpetuated.
