Homepage problem
Reply
Posted 2003-12-30, 08:49 AM
I encountered a problem similar to those caused by spyware.
through some crappy infected website.
my homepage was set to some weird search engine.

problem is, when I set homepage to yahoo.com or google.com
this same weird page comes up (when I open internet explorer)

Oddly, I can access all websites without a problem but can't go to yahoo or google.
When I type in yahoo or google on the address bar This damn weird site comes up..
I ran a spyware removal program and it doesnt seem to be fixed and Looked for suspicious files to remove and that didn't help either..

If anyone has some advice I'll appreciate it!
Thanks

I suggest you try Spyware Search & Destroy if you haven't already. It finds more adware than AdAware, so give it a shot. Run housecall (http://www.antivirus.com) while you're at it. If you still find nothing, just reply so we can try other things.

hmm
great test but it didn't solve the problem.
found 3 worms that were deleted
Problem of inaccessable Yahoo and Google still present.

btw antivirus scans, spyware removal scans, manual search for bad files and this most recent scan all fail to solve this small (not really a problem problem)
perplexing

p.s. spybot search and destroy was ran way b4 (forgot the mention)

Have you installed some sort of Search Toolbar? Go look in View Menu, then Toolbars and look for some sort of search toolbar that might have hijacked your homepage.

Easily fixed.
Start / Find (search), and search all your local drives (ie C:\) for "Anything Containing The Text: (website url)"
Like, for example... Let's say it was directing you to http://www.spywaredie.com
Find:
Anything Containing The Text: spywaredie

Then delete that file. This happened to me once, the computer repair guy couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, whenever he'd reset the homepage, it'd go back to a porno site after reboot. What's happening is it stores the script in a file, and reloads the homepage to that one every time you reboot, or reload IE.
After doing that, DO NOT load IE, instead right click it on your desktop and go to properties, set your homepage to what YOU want, click Okay, THEN you can open IE and it should be fixed.

Let me know!
