A brief synopsis is that there are two ways of causing a warp drive. The first, in a traditional universe where string theory is not true, and 1+1=2, they can create a bubble of energy with dark matter behind the space craft, and a lack there of on the front of the space craft. The space craft will be pushed by a "wave" and the dark matter will take an increasingly massive amount of energy to contain. Eventually the warp drive will become unstable and either: A.) Incinerate nearby space around the space craft or B.) Blow up and create a black hole.

The second mode of transportation relies on string theory. It requires the mass of jupiter in energy to allow us to create a dimensional gateway to travel through. Both are hundreds of years from being plausible .
