Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) was a first-person shooter being developed by 3D Realms. It was to follow Duke Nukem 3D as the next game in 3D Realms' Duke Nukem series and was being directed by one of the creators of the original Duke Nukem game, George Broussard. 3D Realms had not set a release date for the game, instead insisting the game would be released "when it's done".[4]
In May 2009, after twelve years of development and three in-game trailers, ShackNews announced that further production of the game has ceased.
The following things have been accomplished between Duke Nukem Forever's announcement on April 28th, 1997 and its death on May 6th, 2009...

- The American War for Independence
- The United States Civil War
- World War I
- The United State's involvement in the Vietnam War.
- World War II and the entire Manhattan Project. Yes, even the complete development of the atomic bomb took less time.
