I wanna start a non-ladder character

How cheap is shit on nl compared to ladder stuff? I'm asssuming since their is an overflow of items I should be able to get a character up fast and with some kickass shit? People give any shit away for free still? I got a 77 ladder character but it gets boring cause nobody can do baal games >.> or they're all full
