Crysis Demo

Anyone played it?

It's brilliant! And man alive, is it a system hog!

If you don't know, the recommended specs are:

- 2.2ghz dual core processor or better
- 2gb RAM
- Vista
- nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 640mb (or similar)

I've got slightly better specs. And the optimal settings? Medium! It will run on High, just, but Very High is completely out of the picture.

The graphics are great, the suit you wear is an amazing piece of kit, and all in all it's a very good demo... even on Medium settings.

If you want to play it, you MUST have Vista and a DX10 compatible card. And the link is here:

http://na.llnet.cdn.ea.com/u/demos/Crysis_SP_Demo.exe

It's also on FileFront if you prefer to get it that way. The good thing about the above link is that it's a direct link, and you can download it in your torrent client.

In 5 years when I can afford a system like that I'll try it out.

I don't suppose it makes you feel any better to know that even the real entusiasts, with eight core processors, eight gig of RAM, and two nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768mb graphics cards in SLi, have difficultly running the demo on High settings, let alone Very High?

It's a crazy system hogger. And the first time I've epxerienced something that means hardware needs to catch up with it, rather than the other way round.

Makes you wonder what they designed it on, and how long that shit took to render a scene...

There's a University about an hour's train journey away that specialises in Computer Animation, and Computer Games Design and what not. They've got a massive budget, and replace all their hardware yearly.

Recently, they bought a few hundred computers with the old eight core processor, eight gig of RAM, stupidly good graphics card setup. They also bought a lot of new servers, which they've networked, and put in a locked room. These servers have extremely fast processors, more RAM than you can shake a stick at, and terabyte upon terabyte of storage. And they use them simply for rendering.

If that's what they use to simply render students work, then the fella's who made Crysis must be using a supercomputer or three!
