Surely that's not legal?

Sweden doesn't have piracy laws like the rest of the world... so why on earth has TPB been raided?

They DO have anti-piracy laws. They just don't follow international copyright laws.

Essentially, tpb can be charged only if they have pirated Swedish material on their servers.

The official reasoning behind the raid of the TPB servers appears to be "assistance of copyright violation". On the other hand, Henrik Pontén, the most famous media figure of the Swedish APB ("Anti Pirate Bureau"), claims that the main target of the raid was a pro-piracy lobby group known as Piratbyrån, or "The Pirate Bureau". The latter has no involvement in illegal sharing of copyrighed material in any way, and if Pontén's following words are true, there has been a serious breach of our fundamental rights of free speech:

"Yes, I am happy with the fact that the police has started to work with this types of matters. At the same time, we here at Antipiratbyrån feel that the police have acted well towards the copyright violating organization Piratbyrån, that runs the site. The Pirate Bay is more in the bottom of the chain, even if the harm the site has caused is very extensive."

The translation above appears to have been done by associates of Antipiratbyrån, and is for the most part accurate with the exception of some weird grammar. Either way, Swedish heads will roll.

Here's some more stuff in English about the raid:

Haha, it appears that the official Swedish government and police enforcement websites have been DDoS'ed by mobs of angry pirates, who are convinced our constitutional rights have been violated in the "anti-pirate raids".
