Reply

hey, me and my girlfriend just found my other play cd so we installed on our comps and are looking to play together. Can anyone walk me through the setup for the Lan gameplay? Sometimes it works but others it dont.

Care to be more specific about your hardware and OS setups, and what happens when your attempts to play UT2004 via LAN fails to work?

Generally, UT2004 doesn't pose much of a problem, networking-wise, as long as you use two separate, valid CD-keys. Ensure that your LAN connection is not hindered by an overheated router or damaged Ethernet cables (pinging each other's computers is a good, initial check).

we both have windows xp and we are using a linksys router. What had been happening was i would dedicate a server and it would kick me out of the game open a small command window, and it would gimme a count of seconds it took to launch i could then reopen the game and look for the server i hosted and we could play. Problem is i always get kicked out and have to reopen the entire game all over again.

the other thing is when i got the game hosted i would be in it waiting for my girlfriend to connect, she would push refresh on the server list, untill she found my server, then she would connect but, instead of connecting to the most recent one it would connect to the one we made 30 ago.

The latter sounds weird. As for the former, disconnects which take place shortly after joining a game tend to happen if at least one of the players lack a valid CD-key for UT2004.

I assume you have tried to host a game via the other computer and/or without using the computer as a dedicated server?

we both have valid cd-keys, im using an unreal tournament anthology with ut2004 installed, and she is using an actual ut2004 game, we have tried hosting on each computer.

there is an option you might know about, Listen and Dedicate -- what is the difference?

The short description of the difference between Listen and Dedicate is that Listen starts a fairly normal-seeming game (akin to a practice session) which other players can join, while Dedicate creates a more stable server for other players, which you normally do not play in using the computer running the server.

Most online servers for UT2004 use the Dedicate mode (which, as the name implies, creates a dedicated server), while most short-term, "Hey-let's-play-CTF-Face!", LAN-esque servers use Listen mode.
