This was the game that started it all. The setting for Wasteland, while poorly animated, was brilliantly conceived, and obviously provided the inspiration for Fallout. The difficulty level was particularly high, considering the game auto-saved when entering or exiting new areas, and there was no way to revert to old saves (the game just rewrote the entire disk each time it saved - C64 = old technology...don't ask). Basically, if you screwed up big time, you had to start over. Add to that the fact that some of the enemies were absurdly difficult and you ended up with a beautiful (for 1986) yet irritating RPG.
I'm not sure how accurate the Brian Fargo quote is at the end of the article, but if they do revive this series, I'll probably shed a tear of joy.
