Post 2 More Challenging Riddles!
Reply
Posted 2002-11-27, 08:01 AM
These are slightly harder than the previous ones I have posted. Everyone seems to be getting the others pretty easily, or close to the correct answers, do the difficulty was raised slightly.

1.) There are four (4) people that were kidnapped and are faced with this riddle to save their lives:

The killer has loaded each of the four (4) guys up with explosives that will detonate if more than one (1) word comes out of any of their mouths (Don't ask me how, just accept it). Now, he lines the 4 men up in a single file line, and takes out 4 hats; 2 green ones and 2 red ones. The 4 men are temporarily blindfolded as he randomly places each of the hats on them (so 2 are wearing a green colored one, and the other 2 are wearing the red colored ones). Next, he places a wall between the First and the Second man, that way, the Second, Third, and Fourth men can't see the First.

Knowing this, it is safe to say that the Third man can only see the Second man, and the Fourth man can only see the Second and Third man. Now, the blindfolds are taken off (and no, there was no possible way for any of them to see anything while they were on), and now the killer tells the 4 men that they collectively have 30 seconds to shout out the color of the hat they are wearing (only their hat color, not anyone else's).

No forms of signaling or anything tricky will be done or else the killer will set off the explosives himself. Someone will always be 100% sure of what color hat they have on. Who is that person, and why are they saying it so confidently?

2.) You have two (2) non-homogenous wires, each that burn exactly 1 hour. Using those 2 wires and 1 lighter, how can you figure out exactly 15 minutes? This is a theoretical answer, so when I say no estimating, I mean that no estimating in terms of folding the wires or anything like that.

Good Luck!

Why? He can't see anything, how would he have any idea? Please explain the answer and not just answer.

Hmm, if 2 and 3 are wearing the same color hat, 4 knows he has the other color.

Now, it depends on the type of hat. If it's something like a cowboy hat, then they can see the brim.

I know the solution to the second one, though. Light both ends of one rope and one end of the other rope on fire, when the first rope is done burning, light the other end of the second rope. The first rope when lit at both ends only take 30 minutes to burn. After 30 minutes of burning from one end on the second rope, you are left with a 30 minute rope. When you light this rope on both ends it becomes a 15 minute rope.

Very nice on 2.)

Well, for one, to answer your question, lets just say for arguments sake that the person wearing the hat has no possible way of knowing the color. They are yomikas (SP?? That Jewish thing they wear on their heads).

It was the 3rd man. He can only see the hat of the second man, but he knows that if his and the 2nd man's hats were the same, the fourth man would've guessed.

And it's spelled Yamulke. I know, I was just being an ass

Good Job!

So the answer is either the Third or the Fourth man for those given reasons!

I guess I'll have to get harder ones from now on.

Actually it wouldn't work for the fourth man if he saw a hat of each color.

Ok, this is the deal then, it is a deduction answer:

Since this all must take place within the 30 seconds given, deduction will be used by the men to figure it out.
1. The First man is out of the question, he can't see shit.
2. The Second man is pointless too, as he can't see shit either.
3. If the fourth man sees two of the same colored hats, he instantly knows that he is the opposite color, so he shouts out the answer right away!
4. Now, the third man can deduct that if the fourth man doesn't say anything right away (because then he is looking at two different color hats), he has the opposite color of the second man, and therefore shouts out his color!

This can only be done this way, and that is why the 30 seconds is crucial. Because either they will answer right away because it is obvious, or the third man has to be smart and deduct that scenario.

1. They take that hats off, throw it at the kidnapper to distract him while he is they take bombs off and throw it at him so when he explodes it he dies. As they are throwing the hats they take a peak at the color. :P
2. They trade the 2 wires & lighter for a watch.
Yay I got em both!
I did get #1 right though, that the third man looked at the other 2 and did process of elimination kinda.

Maybe tonight we'll fly so far away... We'll be lost before the dawn...

Yes, but he's screwed if he sees two different colors.

How do you figure he is screwed? He is the third man, he can only see the second man's hat, because the first one is shielded from everyone because of the wall. Therefore, he knows he is opposite of the second mans if the fourth guy doesnt speak up. Understand? If not, just read the problem again very carefully then read my answer, it makes perfect sense.

Oh, I meant the fourth man. He'd be screwed if the two he can see are both the same color.

I just typed it wrong. I was the guy who solved it.

It was never stated that the kidnapper had a hat on.

Well if it didn't specify if he FOR SURE had a hat on, there is no way that he could 100% know what color hat he had on.

If he is seeing two of the same color, he is obviously the other color hat... I know you were the one that solved it, but how come you don't even understand your own answer then?

I meant the other way around. If he saw one hat of each color, he'd have to guess.
