Given that both GTA3 and GTA: Vice City are still raking in the dough, Rockstar can afford to be a little generous. And they are, with their Rockstar Classic lineup, a series of free PC games to download to introduce new fans to old Rockstar titles and bring that warm, fuzzy nostalgic feeling to old fans. The first game available at the site is none other than the game that kick-started it all, the original Grand Theft Auto. Although it does pale in comparison to the current games, it is interesting to see both the evolution of the series and how much of the basic structure was in place then. And hey, it won't cost you anything to boot it up for a few minutes, anyway.
GTA1 has actually been offered as a free download before, by now-defunct British website Freeloader, but unlike that version this is the full game (including the ever-popular radio). Rockstar were even nice enough to modify the original DOS-based version to work natively on Windows PCs.
Two caveats, though. Firstly, the file weighs in at a hefty 328MB. Needless to say, if you're on a dial-up connection, you'll need to be the patient type to even attempt this. Secondly, Rockstar require your personal details (name, home address, email address) before you can download the game, so it's not exactly a free lunch... well, close enough. You can download the game from
here.
You thought I meant Vice City, didn't ya? Suckers!
