It's actually fairly relevant to capturing the tension of the situation in my mind. If you had lived here, you would know how much more aggressive the black guys at my school were than the white guys. This, in my mind, added a sense of tension. However, I forget that some people live in mormon pretty pink pony land and probably have never had to deal with tensions from a disenfranchised and pissed off group of people. I forget that it's also insulting to refer to someone who self-identified himself as "black" as ..."black". REDNECK CITY BABY.
I was raised in Bolivia, North Carolina. AKA, the south. The majority at my school was black. I was one of 4 white kids who rode my bus. I haven't lived in "mormon pretty pink pony land" all of my life.

I'm not saying it's insulting to refer to them as "black". I'm saying it's insulting to bring up their race when it isn't relevant. It's no different than, say, if a woman were to rob a bank rather than a man. They would make so much of a deal out of the fact that she's a woman, when in comparison they would barely even acknowledge the fact that a male robber is male. Our media, and society in general, are quick to label minorities as such. The same situation would apply to a white robber and a black robber. 10 times out of 10, the media will specify that a robber is "African American" if he is. Maybe 1 time out of 10, they will specify that the robber is "Caucasian" if he is.

It's covert racism/sexism/etcism.
