Unfortunately, this really isn't anything new and it's been going on for ages. What is worse about it though, is that there seemingly are still about 50% of the population that will read this and believe every word of it, it's the same morons that believe if they don't send 7 chain emails in 7 minutes they will contract AIDs and be quarantined.
It may not be anything new, but the internet is sure making it easier to spread ignorance at the speed of light.
