Well, it seems like it varies from brand to brand, and some brands do seem to have SOMETHING in them that's usable, for instance it looks like the duracell batteries have 4 D batteries in them, which would make sense because D batteries are 1.5v each, but it's not worth it because the 6v costs more than 4 D batteries.
