Well, I've finished the series, and I have to say, this is my new top anime, above .hack or Initial D. This series just grabs me in an indescribable way.

Since Sovereign asked if it was possible for a war story to have a happy ending, I will say that while things do turn out in a despressing manner, the series leaves you on a positive note.
