It's ok if you don't have to move very fast in your game, I mean the difference isn't that much off, (I alternate computer that are roughly same specc'd alot). For ex: If playing WoW you don't really notice anything that much, but something among/along the lines of a FPS (Counterstrike, BF2, Doom) you will notice it and your moves won't be as sharp.
Edit: Basically if you had a choice like kan said, go with the Laser, and if you don't one go ahead and buy one  . The only real good use for a trackball is surfing the net.
