New in 1.10 is a separate ladder zone. Ladder characters cannot join games with non-ladder characters and vice-versa, therefore, ladder items are items on ladder characters. Note that ladder items will eventually become non-ladder items as ladder characters become non-ladder characters at the end of each ladder season.
