Actually, the name 'wife beater' came from Tina Turner's husband Ike Turner. Everytime he would beat her, he would wear a tank-top, later becoming the wife beater. Ike is even wearing the shirt in his mug shots.

But he says that's the same reason, just different scenarios. In the movie Brando would wear a wife beater every time he beat his wife.
