One of the ways that you can fix this, is to log onto an old configuration that worked correctly, when you restart your computer, hit F8, then go onto the last known good configuration, (For XP), then normally you can access the old stuff as it worked correctly, if this doesn't work then you will want to hit F8 again after you restart and go to safemode and go to administrator, and fix it from there in control panel.
