Not really. LoD was a standard RPG, meaning that you explored towns, dungeons, the world map, and the battle system was a little more restrictive. FFT was a tactics game, meaning it focused almost entirely on combat, therefore making the battle system a lot more open-ended, but eliminating the "exploration" element entirely.

And LoD was worlds better than FF8. FF8 was a monstrosity, and LoD was a mediocre RPG. At least LoD's plot made sense. FF8 was the most jumbled, incoherent mess I've ever seen.
