Gravitational waves announcement
 
It appears gravitational waves have been detected. From what I've heard, they have a 5 sigma signal which they should announce in about ten minutes. (9:30 AM CST). Link to the NSF live stream of the gravitational wave announcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyo4DFr4D4I

The energy release of the BH merge was what, ~10^50 J? I really hope most of that energy was converted into gravitational waves...

Why does it matter what form it took? It's not as if it were close enough to effect you or your grandchildren.
