choosing name and having NPCs say it throughout the game
 

How would I make it so at the beginning of the game, the person playing can pick a name of their choice from a letter pad, and then have everybody say this name throughout gameplay?

ex/ I want to pick the name Steve from a selection pad of letters, then I go down stairs and my friend is there. I need him to greet me with the name "Steve" or any name that the player selects.

*edit* Alright, so I found out that "/n[1]" makes NPCs say the selected name, but I still need to know how I get a letter selection pad of some sort.

And no, Steve is just an everyday name (at least where I am).

In 2k-3 isn't there a imput name button you can click on that sets it up atuomaticly for you? I don't remember what version of RPG Maker you're using; and I'm not entirly sure if XP has that button. I'll check it out tomorrow on another computer 'cause Win Vista is incompatable with RPG Maker 2k-3 and XP, though is compatable with RPG Maker 95 XP upgrade.

Actually, RM2K3 and RMXP are compatible with Vista - I've got them both installed on my Vista drive, and they work poifectly. :D

RM2K3, I believe he's using.

New event, set it up how you want to. If it's Auto-Start, or if it's an event that the user can keep on hitting (for example, it's at the start of a really big map and they can go anywhere - including back onto the name event) then you can use either preconditions or a conditional branch with a Switch so that they can only use it once - If HeroReNamed Switch is OFF Then Allow Rename + Turn HeroReNamed Switch ON Else Do Nothing.

To input a custom hero name, it's on the second page of the event commands - Enter Hero Name. Click it. You want the character set to be Hiragana, and the character to be renamed is selected from the drop down box. You can tick the box to show the default name, but I haven't worked out how to delete characters when you're inputting them, so you're kinda stuck if that happens. :p

I'M Saying... well, to be honest, there are the imput name thing... but i still doesn't know how to use it though :p maybe bluecube know it... by the way, i'm using rpgmaker2k3... 'steve' is weird though :D if your name is steve, its not you!

It doesn't work right on my vista, it gives strange errors every so often. Now on they other hand I made a statement without checking it out, that is I don't actually know if RM2-3 is compatible with Vista since I haven't tried it. I've only tried RMXP. So maybe RM2-3 has less issues with vista.

If they refuse to work properly for you, then why not try running them in Compatibility mode? Right Click the game .exe > Properties > Compatibility > Set it to Windows XP SP2.

My 2K and 2K3 both work on my Vista. My crack Xp didn't work and I never really liked it enough to buy it and get the vista patch.

I really want to try VX and see if I really want to redo all I've done with my current project to a new version.

Alright, so I got the event "Enter hero name", but I guess "/n[1]" doesn't work to make everybody say the input name.

Does anybody know how to make the NPCs I made say the chosen name? Is there a script or is it a simple event?

If we were speaking RMXP then yes there is a script but for RM2k3 there is a simple button thing.

By the way the /n[1] is a RMXP script I used at one point so that is not it.

Eh, you know what I was wrong it is in both RM2-3 and XP. I will tell you the problem your having in about 20mins from this post, with pictures.

Sorry that I used it like this. I was going to have a page but I didn't realize I was recording myself why I made the video and the video recorder has problems recording sound, so turn off your sound or pay the consequenses of loud random noises. But because of that the DivX player refused to play it. :(

It's an avi file, not a video file like wmp. Can you make it into a video file, because yes, like you said, I can only hear beeps and screeches.

You need DivX to play the file in Windows Media Player, the K-Lite Pack has DivX in it. By the Way turn off your sound the beeps will knaw at you until you turn off the sound. By the Way the Second Download is the K-Lite pack incase you don't want to read.

Yes the second download on that page is the K-Lite pack, install it, and you will have a ton of video codecs, in fact I think it has every video codec know to man.

Yes Click on the Enter Hero Name page 2 of the events then set it for the character, you can tell the game to have the name automatically there or you can tell the game to have the name slot empty.
