HP Printer Trickery
Saw this on digg today. It's an old trick, but still great. If your school or office has HP printers, try using this tool to change the settings. I had a lot of fun today changing the LCD screen display to say "INSERT COIN" or "CHANGE WHITE TONER." There are some very confused people today.
How to use: 1) Run it 2) Enter IP of printer (leave port at default usually) 3) Click the rightmost icon 4) Change message! To find the IP of the printer, go to printers & faxes, right click properties of the printer, then look at the ports tab. |
Back in Highschool I used to telnet into all of the HP Laser Jet 4050 printers and disable all printing. Then in computer class we'd have an excuse to do nothing since we couldn't print out our work. It usually took the IT guys about 35-40 minutes to fix it each time, when all that really needed to be done was to shut it off for a second and turn it back on.
LoL @ them. |
Ok just tried this program out on the printer in my office and LOL!
Good find Grav |
"ENTER PASSWORD" is currently a winner
|
Will somewhat intelligent IT guys be able to find out what user did it?
|
If it's done by telnet and isn't based on domain accounts, then no, unless they have some sort of packet logging on the router, which I've never even heard of.
|
You wanna speak english?
I seriously have no idea what you're talking about. |
No, they aren't going to trace it.
|
KA - He's saying most routers don't have packet sniffer's built into them, so their is no way to tell what computer sent what to another computer. Some companies have packet sniffer's running on a dedicated server at all times, but to my knowledge there are very few who do.

Found out how to do it via command line Telnet
Telnet IP Address of printer 9100 ( example, telnet 10.1.0.254 9100 ) It will say Connecting.... Now hit enter, and it'll just go to the top of the page, and it looks like its fucked up but it's not. Now, if you type anything and then X out of the telnet box, it will print whatever you typed... So, Telnet Ip Address 9100 Hey there Mr. Anderson *X out* Hey there Mr. Anderson will print out now to change the LCD display, once you have telnetted in through port 9100, type this: @PJL RDYMSG DISPLAY="Whatever you want it to say" Then X out of the box, and Boo-Ya it changes.. Also, on HP LaserJet 4050 printers, you can FTP in and whatever you upload, it prints. Another Plus, The default administrative user/password is Administrator/password So you could go: FTP ip addresss Use: Administrator Password: Password and bam you got admin priveledges... though not sure exactly what you can do with them on a printer lol.. |
I wasn't looking to mess up anyones printer, just a little laugh. Thanks though.

Neither am I, I was just giving the forum random useful information
|
How do you find the IP of the printer?
|
Well that depends.. what brand of printer is it, and how many machines do you have on your network?
