You can't, really. Because no matter what, the connection is still being made. You could rent a server/torrent box and use that to download files, then transfer it to yourself, but that's a lot of hassle. Protect it from whom, though? I'm not aware of any group that targets anime P2P traffic.

What I mean is, I don't know of any group that tracks anime downloaders/uploaders so they can be sued.

It's not a big enough industry here for them to fuck with it, imo. If anything it gets anime more licenses if it's pirated. It also helps them get on t.v. like adult swim which I'm sure is at least somewhat lucrative.

Two hentai companies are targeting illegal downloads. I think one of them is kitty media and I can't remmber the other. Bandai has threatened legal action against fansubbers of the most recent ghost in the shell movie, but for the most part they dont seem to give a shit. Just try to keep from downloading licensed anime and you should be fine.
