I'd be shocked if the military isn't researching exoskeletons for heavy combat already. I imagine that the main constraint is cost-effectiveness.

The University of Kentucky is a leading researcher in exoskeletons =D. The main problem I could think of would be a viable long-lasting energy source.

I imagine overbalancing them would be a bitch to prevent, too.

I heard recently that some sort of exoskeleton like cyber-ninja ala Metal Gear Solid suit was going to be made available to the military soon, for a cheap price. Like it's not something super intense, but I think it's just like full bullet proof body armor and resistant to flame and all sorts of other shit.

The only upcoming military exoskeleton I know of is a system to take the increased weight of the soldier's gear off his legs.

Yep, that's it. The bad thing is the system itself is pretty heavy once it runs out of power so ...yea.

Has the government mandated that it shall run on Gasoline yet? :D

And of course it doesn't take watching too many animes to realize that asians will be the first to invent a mech/gundam/walker type machine.
