Life Discussions Add On

Just thought of something, maybe you should implament a small hack so when a members makes a thread/post. They have a checkbox to post as an Anonymous user. This way he/she won't feel they will be judged or used agaist in other threads so to speak.

WetWired 2005-05-24 06:34 AM

Or maybe just make it so guest can post.

Sovereign 2005-05-24 07:19 AM

Only problem with that is I can't ban guests if they are being dicks.

WetWired 2005-05-24 10:02 AM

Hmm, well, you can make it so guests can only post threads and that threads are moderated, but then someone has to watch the moderation queue.

D3V 2005-05-24 10:16 AM

People should just register, it's seriously not hard at all. If you let guests post you would have to constantly watch the threads, not that your not doing it now or whatever, but then people like me could log out and call everybody a nigger and you'd have no way of tracing it?

RoboticSilence 2005-05-24 10:29 AM

I like the anonymous posting better than guest posting because guests have no obligation to be appropriate as they cannot be banned. Anonymous members are still tied to the forum.

Demosthenes 2005-05-24 12:10 PM

It's an idea. I don't know whether or not I like it, but it might work. I say give it a shot. Of course, my opinion shouldn't matter too much, because I'll be staying out of there except to give Grav a hard time.

Grav 2005-05-24 01:37 PM

It's a cute idea. Is it possible, WW?

WetWired 2005-05-24 02:23 PM

It's certainly possible, but there becomes an issue of annonymity vs. moderatability. Should moderators be able to see who's really posting or should they not be able to tell untill they look at the banned list and see who they last banned?

In any case, with vB3.5 beta comming next month, I'm not interested in writing any new vB3.0 hacks; seems like a waste, you know?

!King_Amazon! 2005-05-24 03:01 PM

You said the same thing when vB3.0 came out.

Maybe make it like the "Talk To The Staff" Forum, where only 4+ Stars can see what your name is if you choose to remain anonymous. That way you can remain anon even from the normal mods, but if you do something that needs to be punished, you still can be.

I think that if this idea is implemented, then moderators should have enough trust from the administration to not leak who posted what if they choose to be annonymous, and be trusted not to ridicule the person either. Moderators should definitely be able to see who's posting.

Medieval Bob 2005-05-24 04:44 PM

While I agree in concept, in use I don't really see the need for moderators to see who posted what if it's anonymous.

Firstly, I don't see the need for the anonymity in the first place. It's an online forum. How many of us really know anyone else on here?

Secondly, if a user posts something objectionable in anon-mode and a mod sees it, he can simply trash it then alert an admin. The admin can still read the post in the trash can, and he can take whatever action is appropriate.

D3V 2005-05-24 10:31 PM

Exactly, which takes away the whole point of being anonymous.

WetWired 2005-05-24 10:55 PM

And it turns out that my decision was justified, and after it came out, I went right back to hacking. vB3.5 will be an architectural change. Any hack written for vB3.0 will need significant re-work to work with vB3.5. Unlike the vB3.0 thing where they kept saying it was coming really soon, they have already stated that the vB3.5 beta will come in June of this year.

WetWired 2005-05-24 10:56 PM

Which is why I suggested the guest posting thing at the start.

LiveWire 2005-05-25 12:12 AM

Personaly I belive guest have no rights into posting in any forum on Zelaron. If they want to post a thread then they must atleast have the curiosity to register with the site. You can't ban a guest, unless you IP ban them, even then most of the cases will be they have a Dynamic IP Address.

Guest can't be trusted not to troll/flame, break rules, ect.. That being said, the issue would be weather or not to allow staff to few the posters name (ie: Moderators, or Sup Moderators).

There shouldn't be much of a problem here is as this option to post as an anonymous user should only be present when creating new threads, or the thread starter is posting a reply to the thread. Thats when the anonymous option should be avalible. That being said, if the anonymous user is making a thread just to flame, then simply move it to the trash can and an Admin can warn that user via PM or take nessary actions based on what rule was broken.

If you see that the anonymous user is posting replys that are breaking the rules then any mod can warn an anonymous user. Seeing as the anonymous user will know he/she is being warned. If it doesn't stop after that then the mod will move the thread to the trash can and post a new thread in the Activity Report forum for an admin to take action. Should give the admins something to do.

Which will end up being what is implimented, giving the fact you run the show. I don't really have any problem with it, let it pan itself out.

WetWired 2005-05-25 08:19 AM

But if posts by guests are moderated, then guests won't be able to troll or flame or advertise, or whatever. How is a mod supposed to warn the user without finding out who it is? Do you mean in the thread? Because any other sort of communication would require userid, and if I were to take steps to mask that, then this hack would grow way out of proportion.

Lenny 2005-05-25 10:48 AM

Is it possible to make a little forum bit where the guests can post (and us), but they've got a limit of 10 posts or something, and then if they like talking with us etc. then they can sign up...

vB3.5 eh...what differences to vB3.0 will it have...if any??
