100Gb Blu-Ray Disc

TDK develops 2X, 100GB Blu-ray Disc prototype
By Martyn Williams, IDG News Service

TDK Corp. has developed a prototype Blu-ray Disc that can store twice as much data, and record it at twice the speed, as existing Blu-ray Discs.

The disc, unveiled at a TDK exhibition in Tokyo this week, can record data at 72Mbps (bits per second), double the 36Mbps rate for current Blu-ray Discs. TDK increased the write speed by using a more powerful laser and making some changes to the material of the disc’s recording layer, said Nobuyuki Koike a spokesman for TDK.

Well...amazing doesn't describe it...

Isnt that what one of the new consoles is using?

Original Sin 2005-05-20 02:03 PM

Yea, the Ps3 is using Blu-Ray Discs.

That'd be cool if Sony got ahold of those new ones.

Hades-Knight 2005-05-20 02:15 PM

so much porn so little space!

RoboticSilence 2005-05-20 04:55 PM

That article failed to mention the fact that TDK developed a scratch-proof teflon coating for all Blu-Ray discs.

Grav 2005-05-20 05:00 PM

I wonder if they make teflon condoms.

Penny_Bags 2005-05-20 06:11 PM

You know what the more important question is though...

Lenny 2005-05-21 05:47 AM

Really??

Wow...100gb discs that can't be scratched...we'd never have disc troubles again!

And think of the size of the games that could be put on them...think, the average time to fully comlpete San Andreas was 120hours...and that was a normal 5gb or so DVD-disc. With 100gb discs, you could be looking at a couple of months of none-stop play (of a game the same quality of San An...ie graphics etc...as the better the graphics, the more disc space they take up)...

Imagine the storylines Square-Enix could make into games...think of a possible FF13...on a 100gb disc...I'd be there for over a year plodding my way through it...

It makes you want to break down and weep...

What is the more important question Pen?? Does it have something to do with the Xbox 360, HD-DVD's or whether PS3 will use 100gb??

sue_13 2005-05-21 08:16 AM

It'd be near impossible to fill one of those with a video game. It'd take forever to write the story lines and all that good stuff.

Lenny 2005-05-21 08:27 AM

Oh, Square-Enix will find a way...and if they don't, then we can count on Rockstar setting the next GTA in a full country (maybe England...:D), or a continent (GTA: Europe anybody?). Someone will do it...they'll be able to do so much that they'll kick themselves if they don't fill it.

JRwakebord 2005-05-23 08:33 AM

Imagine someday there being a Halo that went on for weeks... *drool*
Or yah, a GTA:Europe. Wow.

Penguin 2005-05-23 08:58 AM

Can you imagine how long a game of that magnitude would take? Hell just the bug testing phase could take a year. The development could be like 10+ years.

GTA SA was made in what? 2-3 years? And you want a game thats like at least 10 times that right? 20-30 years? They would have to up their team by like 20 times if they want to get it done within 5-10 years and even then it would be so complicated for a team to work on So much....

Kaneda 2005-05-23 09:32 AM

And by then all we will have to do is plug a little cord into the back of our skulls and bam! we're in the game.

Lenny 2005-05-23 10:02 AM

Eeeek...first person shooter, plug yourself in: "Mummy, there's terrorists in my bedroom Mummy!"

Anyone ever read the Legendeer series by Alan Gibbons??

I'm sure that they'll find a way around it Penguin...though it would take a lot longer than a normal game...yeah...look at KH2...that's on 2 DVD discs and it's taken 4-5 years nearly...and that's just on 2 DVD discs...

100gb Blu-Ray disc...you could release a whole series of games!!! Imagaine...all GTA's on one disc...
