2nd Asian Earthquake
8.2 Magnitude Aftershock Rocks Northern Sumatra
By Mike O'Sullivan Los Angeles 28 March 2005 Seismologists say an 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, late Monday was the largest of thousands of aftershocks to the devastating quake that struck in late December. It was smaller than the 9.0 magnitude quake that was followed by a destructive tsunami three months ago. But seismologist Jill McCarthy of the U.S. Geological Survey says the quake that struck late Monday can also be classified as a "great earthquake." "It occurred near the coast of northern Sumatra, about 205 kilometers west-northwest of a town called Sibolga," she said. She says most aftershocks are much smaller than the initial temblor, but an aftershock of this size is not uncommon after a larger quake. Her agency monitors earthquakes, but she says it is not equipped to monitor ocean levels. "However, an earthquake of this size and in this location could possibly generate a tsunami," she said. The seismologist says aftershocks tend to diminish in number after a big earthquake, but the size of the aftershocks and their effect on the local oceans is unpredictable. ---------- It was around 5pm (BST)... ---------- Article taken from http://www.voanews.com/english/2005-03-28-voa31.cfm |
Aftershocks like this will be going on for a while. They won't be nearly as bad as the first, though. According to geologists, if there are tsunamis in the next couple, most will probably be hitting Northern Australia, which minimal damage.... but then again, who really knows.

AfterShocks suck

Yep, teh end of teh world.

If that earthquake had been in deeper water, then Sumatra would have been drowned again...

That is horrible, but what do you expect when they live near the most active tectonic plates. They move on a daily bases, usually to small to notice, but then they get the big ones.
There is really nothing that can be done to stop it, they need to have measures set up so when it doesn happen people can be transfered away asap and such. |
We're all going to die Dec 21, 2012. 7 years of H.o.e. before we all die. Gradually gets worse.

We will all die in "disastrous earthquakes. If the cracks in the Earth don't swallow you up then the terrible shaking that your brain cells get will give you a fatal headache!" OMG! IT'S ALREADY STARTED! THE 7 YEARS OF H.O.E THAT D3V TALKED ABOUT HAVE STARTED!!!!!!! :p |
Something I forgot to add...there was a 3 metre (9 foot) tsunami on a small island near the epicentre...
