NVidia to power Sony's Playstation 3

Don't know if anyone has heard this yet, but:

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/news/1159927

Basically:

Sony and nVidia are to co-develop a graphics engine to power graphics cards and entertainment consoles.

The chip will be used in nVidia's GeForce cards which will power forthcoming consumer devices from Sony, almost certainly including the Playstation 3 console.

WOW....there's a playstation 3?

Lenny 2004-12-08 11:22 AM

Er...yeah. I think they unveiled it, or the idea of it (PS3) at the last E3? I don't know. Anyone help?

osmoses-jones 2004-12-08 11:36 AM

You sure?

I have a feeling Xbox 2 is going to do a ton better than the Xbox did when it first came out. Microsoft will do much better this time.

osmoses-jones 2004-12-08 08:38 PM

We never know what future hold.

It matters not whether you win or lose; what matters is whether I win or lose.

`Insolence` 2004-12-09 05:10 PM

No it's not.

PS3 will use 'Core' (or is it 'cell' I forget) processors, not much faster.

Simply a processor with multiple cores, like dual processing. Won't improve gaming much over regular processors until they're games made for it. And even then, 'Core' processors main feature is the fact that it will have DIGITAL RIGHTS BUILT INTO IT... permenant end to piracy, apparently.

!King_Amazon! 2004-12-09 05:26 PM

I didn't think piracy was that big of a problem with console games. Not everyone is willing enough or even leet enough to slap a mod chip into their system.

!King_Amazon! 2004-12-09 05:29 PM

PS3 is going to be able to play blu-ray DVDs which means it's going to own anything.

The Ps3 Will definately be worth getting, just like the Ps2, and old Ps1 were.

Sovereign 2004-12-10 05:12 PM

K. Please tell me when they introduce 1.5 terrahertz chips into gaming consoles.

Lenny 2004-12-11 03:47 AM

You'll be waiting, oh 5 or 6 years maybe?

Intel have created the 1.5 terahertz chip, and are building it into a new design of some sort, but that is probably what you are talking about (http://www.pcvsconsole.com/news/comm...s=810&filter=0), yes, no?

Maybe the PS4 will make all your dreams come true?

You don't even need that much power, twit. The power they have now is enough to last them for years, but producers of video games aren't going to their full potential,

Sovereign 2004-12-11 06:32 PM

LoL. Check who I replied to. "100x faster then any computer out" I used mine as an example. 1.5 ghz x 100 = 1500 ghz = 1.5 thz. Learn to read.

Lenny 2004-12-14 10:11 AM

I don't get it. Who you talking to?

I'm a guessing it's me, but...I still think PS4...maybe.

Raziel 2004-12-14 11:57 PM

His initial "Terrahertz Chips" post was in response to Shinto Katana, who claimed that the PS3's processor will be "100 times faster than any computer out there."

Read the line of text at the top of each post. At the top of mine, it says "Posted Today, 11:50 PM in reply Lenny's post starting "blah blah blah." That's how you know who the other person is responding to.

I believe that they have the technology to do things like that right now, but release it slowly as a marketing ploy to maximize profits.
