Need help with making a menu like a zelda one

I have the graphics and made my menu i just can't get it to (when i press the button selected) come up!

Some more description would be helpful, as well as a screenshot of the code you're using.

Edit:

For example, is your menu a Picture, with other pictures for items, or is it a map with charsets for items?
