Army of Nodes (Depth of Field test)

I just thought I could demonstrate how nice a DOF (Depth of Field) effect can make even the simplest objects:

What are your techniques to make images look good? :)

Randuin 2003-02-21 08:41 AM

gratz you learned how to use depth of field :D like refraction... how long was the render time?

Chruser 2003-02-21 11:48 AM

Actually, I've known Depth of Field for a while, but I decided to get two industry plug-ins for this. X-Dof and HyperSmooth from http://www.evasion3d.com were both used for the final outcome.

That looks nice, good job... what is Depth of Field?

Chruser 2003-02-21 05:08 PM

Generally, a depth of field is a measurement of the range along a camera's line of sight in which objects will be in focus. In short, it's a way to focus a camera at a certain range to make the objects around it appear more blurred to add realism.

Randuin 2003-02-21 05:11 PM

ya he explained it... but not my question... what was the render time dude?

Bezier 2003-02-21 05:28 PM

Nice, but the front ones need to be sharper/crisper.

Randuin 2003-02-21 05:55 PM

notice the top tip of them were crisp n sharp, so i guess that was the focus and the rest were just too close to the camera :D

Acer 2003-02-21 06:18 PM

Yeah I noticed that too, so depth is hard or something?

Randuin 2003-02-21 06:28 PM

not that much if you're used to it i guess :)

Acer 2003-02-21 06:59 PM

I will look into it when it is time for me, sounds kinda easy tho... but ill see then

Chruser 2003-02-21 07:02 PM

The rendering time was about 12 minutes. And yes, the focus was set to the top of the middle object in the second row, so you're right Randuin.

Randuin 2003-02-21 08:10 PM

teehee i'm so smart! :D well it's kinda easy to figure out which points were sharp n crisp which weren't :)

Acer 2003-02-21 08:43 PM

lol good job Randuin, Chruser how is that one project going? The one you showed me a Screeny of?

Randuin 2003-02-21 09:09 PM

which one acer? show us all :D

Acer 2003-02-21 10:14 PM

I hope he dosent mind me linking you to the screeny :P, http://www.zelaron.com/lwmodeler.jpg

Randuin 2003-02-21 10:25 PM

oh that... i saw that one... it's err... okay i guess the top looks a lot less detailed than the bottom (i saw the rendered one) so i dunno think he'll work on it a bit more... i like the lighting tho... the little lights that shoot into the middle is... wierd =\

Acer 2003-02-21 10:39 PM

well it is very nice to me, since I can barely make a head figure(without detail).

Randuin 2003-02-21 10:45 PM

well there are a lot more tutorials now, when i tried to learn LW (before i tried to learn 3dsmax or maya) there was hardly ANY tutorials for LW :)

Acer 2003-02-21 10:50 PM

Yeah, in the Tut list thread they have some good tuts, I mean I have used LW really for about a week and I know how most tools are used from those tuts.
