Affirmative action

Affirmative action is the policy of favoring members of a disadvantaged group who are perceived to suffer from discrimination within a culture. In the United States, affirmative action has been in effect since 1961 preventing employers from discriminating on the basis of "race, creed, color, or national origin." Obviously, the United States today is very different from what it used to be in the 60s.

Do you believe that affirmative action has been mostly negative or positive for the United States, and since the United States has undergone significant changes since its implementation, do you believe that affirmative action should be abolished? Why, or why not?

I can appreciate the spirit of it, but it's also somewhat hypocritical by definition. I'm inclined to say it should be abolished. Hard question, though, with no easy answers.

It's hard to tell this is even in effect, since in school, it's normally always black kids who get punished more/more often, and in the work place nobody gets hired anyway.

Everyone has a 0% success rate, but blacks have to work harder for it.

I think it was a necessary step in the opposite direction, and it has improved things.
Though I know I've been sheltered from institutional discrimination, and it is still rampant in areas underexposed to education or socioeconomic privilege.

The most tangible result has to be political correctness, which bothers me more than anything at times, i.e. saying African American rather than black.

Which is funny, because most blacks insist on being called "black", linking "African American" to their unwilling movement to the US.
