Talk to yourself?

Yes, I do...

Working in the pot room for 9 hours or more a day... Nobody is in there except me so there's nobody to talk to except... Myself. So I've begun talking to myself. *shrug* I dont answer myself or anything... Just talk to myself about favorite movies, bitches, etc. Or tell myself jokes, which I often crack up on... I am the funiest guy on Earth, afterall.

Titusfied 2004-01-12 09:59 AM

I always talk to myself. Its funny because I am constantly explaining situations to myself that I obviously fully understand, but by talking to myself about it, it helps me really make sense of it and gives me a better understanding whether or not I should go ahead with what ever it was I was about to do. Its kind of like the great equalizer...

Nikkolas 2004-01-12 10:04 AM

I ALWAYS socialize with myself. Afterall, what better person to talk to than yourself? Yourself is an ideal conversationalist.

Grav 2004-01-12 11:21 AM

When other people are around, sometimes I talk to myself. Otherwise, I don't.

BlueCube 2004-01-12 12:43 PM

I'll talk to myself, if only while working through an odd problem or something. "Well, I can't do THAT, it might cause an explosion, and if I do THAT OTHER THING, I won't be able to walk ever again... so I'll just do THIS.."

D3V 2004-01-12 12:54 PM

I'll talk to myself when I'm not sure about something, as titus said its sort of an equalizer, helps me string out the conflict, and help find the needed resolution. Yeah kuja's#1 thats funny, the best person to talk to would be myself.

DaFrigginDoctah 2004-01-12 01:21 PM

I talk to myself about anything.
I'll be sitting there like,
"Yeah, I went out with Veronica last night... Dude, she was looking so fucking hot... Almost as soon as I saw her we started making out... We were fucking soon after... She likes anal man, it was wonderful..." Etc. Of course that's just off the top of my head, I've never had such a conversation with myself. Or such a date with anyone named Veronica.

Penny_Bags 2004-01-12 01:43 PM

Meh... if I am at work.

Jessifer 2004-01-12 01:54 PM

Yeah, we do. It scares people. We laugh at them. Ha.

I normally do when no one is around, though.

Medieval Bob 2004-01-12 02:01 PM

I talk in my sleep.

WetWired 2004-01-12 02:42 PM

I sometimes talk myself through situations. If I don't, I usually end up talking to someone else about it, and end up figuring it out just by trying to explain it to someone else. It's simplest to just explain it to myself... for instance

"This is strange. The program seems to go off into the weeds when the begining of the state machine makes a computed jump after the ISR triggers just after setting the value for the program counter high register. The only thing that would make sense is that the ISR is clobbering the program counter high register, but it has code to save and....oh!"

Sovereign 2004-01-12 03:39 PM

I talk to myself sometimes, when im bored and trying to figure out a problem. Its more of mumbling.

uncapped 2004-01-12 07:05 PM

I honestly can't remember any situation where I've ever talked to myself.

timmay1113 2004-01-12 07:30 PM

its what i do when im bored.. gets me through time sometimes and also if im pissed or sad about something i do it

Thanatos 2004-01-12 08:19 PM

That's the only way to get through my work, I swear. When there's nobody inside.. I've got nothing to do. I sometimes sing, but most of the time I just sing to this one kid. Weirdest freaking kid ever. He looks like an oompa loompa -- it freaks him out when I sing to him.

!King_Amazon! 2004-01-12 08:26 PM

Haha, you should sing the oompa loompa songs to him.

Titusfied 2004-01-12 09:31 PM

Other examples are when trying to pick up chicks, going on job interviews, apologies, etc. I always talk to myself to see what sounds the best... I think everyone talks to themselves in one form or another...

DaFrigginDoctah 2004-01-12 10:53 PM

Ahh yes... Singing at work... My favorite songs to sing at work (LOUDLY):
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love (complete with the high pitched voice)
Who Took The Cookie From the Cookie Jar?

I always, undeservingly, get weird looks at work......... :(
Like I'm crazy, or something... :(

Raziel 2004-01-13 12:28 AM

The Darkness are the shit. I'll shoot anyone that disagrees with a lightning bolt from my guitar.

Eddie_Perez 2004-01-13 12:47 AM

I go through alibi's and known upcoming arguments... it helps me to stay on top of my problems. So, not really... I don't pretend there are two of me... so my choice would be.

I talk outloud when no one is near a lot...

basically he was tracing his program and noticed that it was trying to execute code outside the expected area
apparently something to do with an interrupt (breakpoint?) messing with the program counter (stores the address of the next thing to execute)

but thats besides the point
he was just using an experience to portray the age old observation that saying things aloud and/or trying to explain things aloud often helps to bring clarity in thought

anyways i dont usually hold conversations with myself aloud for the sole reason that im lazy and would rather hold a conversation in my head than bother my jaw muscles and my vocal chords
the same goes for thinking things aloud.. for most things i can usually just focus on single question/statements at a time.. and "talk" in my head
for something a little bit challenging i might start mumbling/noises or saying random words just to distract myself
last resort would be to start talking

zagggon 2004-01-13 08:32 PM

Sometimes, when im very bored I speak to myslef in my mind but not out loud.

No, interrupt. Your PC has 16 of them, this particular processor has one. Perhaps the term is more familiar as IRQ, that thing you used to have to set for all your hardware; IRQ is the setting for which interrupt occurs when the hardware device needs attention.

Anycase, I don't think it's so much vocalizing your thought that clarifies it as trying to explain it as if to someone not immediately familiar with the problem you're trying to solve.

LiveWire 2004-01-14 11:49 AM

ahhh, my head hurts now ^_^

just out of curiousity but what processor was this for?
sounds like you were doing some hardcore embedded development

i totally agree with you on the "explaining to others" as it forces you to connect and rationalize it in simpler and/or detailed terms
but i also think that vocalizing it allows you to hear aloud what you are saying and that this is a very key reason for why saying things aloud helps.. similar to how writing things down is supposed to help you to understand and remember them better
somehow it helps when the thought/idea that you are dealing with interacts with other parts of your brain going through the part of your brain that processes audio and visual input and even your motor skills
i do remember some interesting scientific research investigating and supporting this idea.. ill try to dig it up

for some strange reason that outburst gave me an incredibly grotesque image of gollum screaming that same outburst while ejaculating

RoboticSilence 2004-01-15 08:25 PM

I make snide comments to myself but I don't have conversations with myself.

Sovereign 2004-01-15 08:26 PM
